Historic Fort on Mackinac Island

Since we were very near the Fort, it made sense to see it first. Here at Fort Mackinac, history repeats itself every single day.  People dress in Period clothing as they perform their duties. They performed drills while spectators watched.

After climbing this ramp, there were still 27 steps to climb to enter the fort.

You can click on any of the pictures to enlarge them and escape to return to the blog.

The post was constructed by British Soldiers during the American Revolution. Flags have flown over the post since 1780. In inclement weather, they flew a much smaller flag. In 1796, United States soldiers took control of the post and first lifted the Stars and Stripes over Fort Mackinac.

It was a joy to see the old upright piano in the Officers' Hill Quarters, but it was roped off so we could not touch it.

In the next photo taken from the Fort, the Grand Hotel is on the far right overlooking Lake Michigan. If you look closely, you will see the Mackinac Bridge out in the distance.
